Rachel Spector, PhD, RN, FAAN
Author, Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness

Mentoring began the year I became a second year nursing student and the students in their first year were initiated to the nursing role and responsibilities in an overwhelming and busy urban 1,000 bed hospital. Since those early days, I have mentored many nurses and helped them become acculturated to the “nursing culture” in a wide variety of settings and circumstances.

Mentoring is far more than simply teaching someone what to do and it helps the mentor realize the subtleties inherent in the scope of our knowledge and practice; our culture ¬ that must be passed on to the mentee. It is a long-lasting, reciprocal, holistic relationship with another human being in that there is a profound interchange of not only knowledge, but friendship and caring as well. I am a Distinguished Alumna from the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing (1997), a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and Certified and a Scholar in Transcultural Nursing. The Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses, the state organization of the American Nurses Association, honored me as a “Living Legend” in 2007 and in 2008 I was awarded an Honorary Human Rights Award by the American Nurses’ Association.
